Happy Spring Second Grade!

With only a few short months of school left, we still have so many new things to learn.  Please make sure your child is getting enough sleep each night so he/she is attentive in school each day.

The following skills and concepts are now being covered.

Religion:  We are focusing on the importance of each part of the Mass to prepare for First Holy Communion.

Jesus Day will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 8:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. for the Second Graders making their First Communion this year.

First Communion is Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Upper Basilica.  The children need to be in school by 10:00 a.m. (or lower Basilica in case of rain)

Communion Boys’ Attire:  navy blue or black suit; white shirt; navy blue, black or white tie; dark shoes and dark socks

Communion Girls’ Attire:  white dress; veil or headpiece (optional), white tights, knee socks, or ankle socks (Feet must be covered.  No bare legs); white shoes (No gloves, purses, rosaries, or prayer books.)

Language Gr. 1: We are continuing our unit on adjectives.  We will learn about adjectives for what kind, how many, and adjectives that compare (-er, -est) and use them in writing. 
We will learn how to write a persuasive letter using persuasive words such as should, must, need, best, and important, and how to write a good beginning when writing a paragraph.

Language Gr. 2:  We are continuing with our unit on pronouns.  We will be working with the pronouns me, him, her, us, and them.  These pronouns are used after action verbs.  The pronouns I, he, she, we, and they are used as subjects of a sentences. 
We will also identify contractions.  A contraction is a short way to put two words together.  An apostrophe (‘) takes the place of one or more letters.

Reading:  Please continue to review suffixes –ly, -ful, -er, -or, -est; prefixes un-, re-, pre-, dis-; silent consonants kn, wr, gn; consonant pattern gh, ph=/f/; vowels aw, au, augh, al; and contractions.
We are identifying plot (the beginning, middle, and end of a story), main idea/supporting details, sequencing, realism/fantasy, and author’s purpose.
Please read to your child or have your child read at least 10-15 minutes each night.  This will continue to help them with reading fluency and comprehension.  Continue to study spelling words nightly.  The Spelling City website is

Science Gr. 1:  We will begin our work in Chapter 7:  Matter.  The children will learn what matter is and how it can change.  We will learn all about solids, liquids, and gases. Please remember to access the online text and activities related to Ch. 7 at  The username is Gr2K17-18 and the password is rdgsci2.  If your child is absent form school, this is a very beneficial way to review the missed lesson(s) at home.

Science Gr. 2:  We are beginning our work in Chapter 8:  Matter.  The children will learn about different properties of matter; solids, liquids, gases; ways matter can change; and how water can change.  Please remember to access the text and activities related to Chapter 8 using the website  The username is
Gr.2CK17-18 and the password is rdgsci2.  If your child is absent from school, it would be very beneficial to review the missed lesson(s) with your child using our online component.
